The LAUSD School Board approved a brand new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics Gifted Magnet program to be offered at Taft Charter High School starting in the 2016-2017 school year.   By this school year of 2023-2024, the program will be in its 8th year of a comprehensive Magnet program with 9th through 12th grade students.

Program Qualification Standards
Taft Charter HS Gifted STEAM Magnet:  The Gifted STEAM Magnet program at Taft Charter HS is designated as a Gifted/Highly Gifted/High Ability Magnet (G/HG/HA).  Our Magnet program serves students who demonstrate ability to work two years above grade level in academic subjects.  We offer enriched interdisciplinary academic environments that are both exciting and challenging.  We encourage students to use creative/critical-thinking skills.

Two Career Pathways Offered:  Computer Science and Engineering Design
 
Magnet Student Cohort Matriculation​
Taft Charter HS Gifted STEAM Magnet students will advance through their high school career with their Magnet student cohort in the core Magnet designated classes.  The Magnet program will focus on Magnet-wide multi-disciplinary cross cutting content standards.

As an example, the incoming 9th grade Magnet core courses may be:
  • Introduction to Engineering Design / AP Computer Science Principles 
  • Honors English 9
  • Honors Biology or AP Biology
  • Algebra 1,  Honors Geometry or Honors Algebra 2 (or other appropriate math course based on the middle school transcript)
  • World Language (American Sign Language, French, Korean, or Spanish)
  • Physical Education / Team Sports

Developing Real-World Skills for the Road Ahead
Taft Charter HS Gifted STEAM Magnet Program is designed to build real-world skills for our students.  The knowledge and skills students will acquire throughout the Gifted STEAM Magnet program will apply the professional skills they will need to prepare for a STEAM career pathway in college.
