Introduction to Engineering class photoIntroduction to Engineering Design (IED - Year 1)

Students will dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They will work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and will use an engineering notebook to document their work.
 
IED is a full year course required for all 9th graders entering into the Taft HS Engineering Magnet program.  It is the first of the two foundational courses of the Taft HS Engineering Magnet PLTW curricula.

Principals of Engineering class photoPrinciples of Engineering ​(POE - Year 2)​

Through problems that engage and challenge, students will explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students will develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation.

POE is a full year course with successful completion of IED as the required pre-requisite for enrollment.  It is the second of the foundational PLTW courses.

Engineering class photoEngineering Design and Development (EDD - Year 3)

The knowledge and skills students will acquire throughout PLTW Engineering come together in EDD as they identify an issue and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of engineers. This is the Capstone course of the PLTW Curriculum offered by Taft HS Engineering Magnet pathway.
 

Aerospace Engineering (AE - Year 4)

This course propels students’ learning in the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. As they explore the physics of flight, students bring the concepts to life by designing an airfoil, propulsion system, and rockets. They learn basic orbital mechanics using industry-standard software. They also explore robot systems through projects such as remotely operated vehicles.
