Interest to Attend the AIAT

ACADEMY OF INTEGRATED ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY Our unique full inclusion program is an empathetic neuro-diverse environment that employs a unique co-teaching model to form a student-centered small community with a supportive school culture and access to Taft’s resident school electives and AP opportunities.  As a full inclusion program, there are different processes to apply.

Please review the information below.  If you are ready to show interest in the Academy of Integrated Arts & Technology, please follow the method that applies for your child.

  • Twice exceptional interest forms are ongoing. Interested families can submit this interest form to begin the process at any time: https://forms.gle/Fai8p3CVFKfSZFtc7. Once an interest form has been filled out, student records are reviewed and information about the AIAT and the student's needs are sent to the student's current school IEP team. For a student with an IEP, this is a placement that the IEP team considers with relevant information provided by this records review. The AIAT may not be the appropriate placement for all students.
  • Non-resident General Education students must first apply to Taft through Unified Enrollment at www.apply.lausd.net. If you are uncertain if Taft is your resident school, you can check here: https://rsi.lausd.net/ResidentSchoolIdentifier
  • General Education gifted students must fill out an application for special programs at Taft, which will be available through the news and announcements page on Taft’s website when they are released in the Spring and only available to students in the resident area or accepted by the Unified Enrollment process to Taft.

AIAT Gifted Eligibility Criteria for ALL Students

The Academy of Integrated Arts and Technology (AIAT) is a unique program that requires an interest form for all students who are interested.  All students must be either identified or verified in the areas of Gifted Intellectual or Gifted High Achievement as delineated by LAUSD.  This includes students who have been identified through the Intellectual, High Achievement, or Specific Academy category OR have scored in the Standard Exceeded Range on the SBAC assessment in ELA and Mathematics or have total national scores of 85% or above on a district approved standardized achievement test (e.g. OLSAT-8) in required areas (most recent year only). For any of these methods, identified students receive a letter from the district/school as evidence of gifted identification.

Students who are verified gifted and are eligible to apply for the Academy of Integrated Arts and Technology have demonstrated mastery of all four of the critical thinking and problem-solving skills in their primary language which include the ability to:

  • Explain meanings or relationships among facts, information, or concepts that demonstrate depth and complexity.
  • Formulate new ideas or solutions and elaborate on the information.
  • Use alternative methods in approaching new or unfamiliar mathematical problems.
  • Use extensive vocabulary easily and accurately to express creative ideas.

They must also demonstrate the ability or strong potential to work two years above grade level in academic subjects.  The verification takes place through documentation at the verifying school site.

If you have questions about gifted verification, please ask your school’s principal or e-mail Jennifer Ohlund, Assistant Principal for the AIAT at [email protected].
